Glandorf, OH

Glandorf is a Putnam County village with roots in a 1834 migration from Glandorf, Germany. Father Johann Wilhelm Horstmann and other German-speaking settlers established Neu Glandorf and a St. John the Baptist parish the same year. The brick church completed in 1878, with its rectory and convent, is on the National Register of Historic Places; the church still dominates the village landscape. The Precious Blood mission and convent added another Catholic layer to the settlement's early history.

The village's later map followed the railroad and the school. Passenger service reached Glandorf in 1894 and ended in 1919; the old depot stood at Main Street and East Ottawa-Glandorf Road. A town hall and volunteer fire service followed, while today's Ottawa-Glandorf Local Schools include Glandorf Elementary on Church Street. A 1976 sister-city relationship with Glandorf, Germany added a newer layer to that older settlement story. ParkFest ties the village to its German namesake, and the Blanchard River remains part of the area's planning history.
