Glasgow, MO

Glasgow sits on the Missouri River in Howard County, with a small part of the city extending into Chariton County. The town was laid out in 1836 and took its name from local merchant James Glasgow; its post office followed in 1837. River bluffs and routes 5, 87, and 240 frame the city, while the historic downtown carries the look of a Missouri River trading place. Glasgow’s location in the Boonslick region connects it to the state’s early settlement, farm, and river-commerce history.

Education and library life give the city a strong civic spine. Glasgow School District operates elementary, middle, and high schools, and Lewis Library works from an 1866 building that began as part of Lewis College. The library remains a working community institution and one of the oldest continuously operating public library buildings west of the Mississippi.
