Glen Allan, MS

Glen Allan is a Washington County census-designated place just east of Lake Washington's southern shore, with 298 residents in the 2020 census. The lake is a large Mississippi River oxbow with cypress forests, fishing for crappie and bream, and boat launches along its shoreline. Glen Allan has a post office, a community building, and Paul Love Jr. Park, where campsites, a ball field, a fishing site, playground equipment, and picnic tables keep the lake close to daily routines. Western Line School District serves the community through O'Bannon and Riverside schools.

The lake also holds some of Washington County's oldest history. Frederick G. Turnbull established a permanent residence here in 1826, and Linden, the later house on that homesite, stands about a mile north of Glen Allan as a National Register property. Glen Allan is also the birthplace of writer Clifton Taulbert and blues musicians Robert Lee “Smokey” Wilson and Keith Johnson, known as the Prince of the Delta Blues. Glen Allan is a Mississippi Delta place where lake recreation, plantation-era landmarks, schools, and music history sit close together.
