About Glen Lyon
Glen Lyon is a census-designated place in Newport Township, Luzerne County, with 1,877 residents in the 2020 census. Newport Township includes several named communities, and Glen Lyon is the largest of them. Greater Nanticoke Area School District serves local students. Township services, fire and veteran organizations, school routes, and the nearby city of Nanticoke fill in the everyday map, while Wilkes-Barre and the Wyoming Valley handle more specialized work and shopping.
Coal built Glen Lyon. The community grew after anthracite mining reached Newport Township, with the Susquehanna Coal Company and Pennsylvania Railroad shaping work, housing, and rail connections. The mines are mostly part of the past, but subsidence, old rail lines, and neighborhood streets still carry that history. Glen Lyon remains a section of Newport Township rather than an incorporated borough of its own, so its public life runs through township government and shared schools. That combination of mine-town memory and present-day township services is the key to the place.
