About Glenns Ferry

Glenns Ferry is an Elmore County city beside the Snake River, at one of the best-known crossings on the Oregon Trail. Emigrants crossed at Three Island Ford until 1869, when Gustavus “Gus” Glenn built a ferry two miles upstream for freight and travelers. Three Island Crossing State Park and its Oregon Trail History and Education Center keep that crossing visible, while the Glenns Ferry Historical Museum holds the town's later story. Interstate 84 now follows the valley, but the older map is still easy to see: river, ferry, trail ruts, and a town named for the man who put a boat on the crossing.
