Glenvar Heights, FL

Beside Bird Road at Glenvar Heights' northwest edge, a former horse-racing track now functions as one of Miami-Dade County's busiest recreation grounds. The 275-acre Tropical Park opened on the old track site in 1979 and draws about 1.5 million visits a year. Miles of paved paths support walking, running, and cycling, while a boxing center, fitness stations, four baseball fields, track-and-field facilities, tennis courts, and 12 lighted pickleball courts spread organized activity across the week. The Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center continues the property's horse connection with covered show arenas and 198 stalls. Large gatherings use the same grounds: CountryFest brought its livestock show, rodeo, market, and children's activities there in April 2026, and the county's largest Independence Day celebration returned in July with music, food, and fireworks over the lake.

The surrounding community is an unincorporated residential area roughly 10 miles southwest of downtown Miami, between South Miami and Pinecrest on the east and Sunset and Olympia Heights on the west. The 2020 census counted 20,786 residents. Bird Road, Miller Drive, Sunset Drive, and the Palmetto Expressway define much of its street-level geography, but a planned trail would add a dedicated nonmotorized route. In July 2026, county commissioners approved a design contract for the full 5.6-mile Ludlam Trail along a former Florida East Coast Railway corridor near Southwest 69th and 70th avenues. Plans call for walking, running, and bicycling paths linking homes with schools, parks, businesses, transit, and other regional trails. As of that approval, the Glenvar Heights segment remained a design project rather than an open path.
