Gloucester, NC

Gloucester is an unincorporated Carteret County community on the north side of The Straits, a tidal channel linking Core Sound with the North River. Whitehurst Creek bounds the community to the west and Sleepy Creek to the east, so water is part of the map in every direction. The area lies in the Down East coastal country, where roads, creeks, marsh edges, and family land connect the mainland to the sounds and islands beyond.

The Gloucester area has been settled for centuries, and eighteenth-century families left houses and land stories along the creeks. The Bell-Pigott House, associated with one of the earliest settlers in the area, is among the historic places tied to the community. For much of the twentieth century, a ferry linked Gloucester with Harkers Island; the route ended after a bridge opened in 1939. Today Gloucester remains a water-shaped rural place near Core Sound, with Carteret County history, fishing culture, and tidal geography meeting on the same narrow peninsula.
