Glouster, OH

Glouster sits where the West Branch of Sunday Creek meets Sunday Creek in Trimble Township, a village shaped by water, rail, and the deep-mining economy of southeastern Ohio. It began as Sedalia, took the name Glouster in 1886, and has had a post office under that name since 1887. The old coal workings north of town and the former rail loading site point to the industrial map that once organized local work; Wassall Brick adds another chapter in the village's making.

Today the village's regional pull comes from Burr Oak State Park, whose lake, wooded hills, campgrounds, and trails lie just beyond town. A mile north, the 1879 Palos Covered Bridge crosses the East Fork of Sunday Creek and remains one of the area's most recognizable historic structures. Trimble Local Schools serves students from the village, and the Glouster branch of Athens County Public Libraries occupies a practical place on Toledo Street. Visitors may arrive for the park or bridge, but the daily map is still made by the school, library, creek valleys, and roads that connect former mining neighborhoods.
