Golden Valley, MN

Golden Valley occupies only about 10.5 square miles, yet four major routes—I-394 and Highways 55, 100, and 169—give this first-ring suburb several approaches to Minneapolis, five miles to the east. Corporate headquarters and offices for General Mills, Allianz, Mortenson, and Room & Board make the city a substantial employment center as well as a residential community. Golden Valley had 22,552 residents in the 2020 census; the July 2025 estimate was 21,325, 5.4 percent below the revised 2020 estimate base. From 2020 through 2024, 71 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value was $431,400, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $2,428, and median gross rent was $1,785.

Workers' mean travel time was just under 20 minutes. Addresses fall in either the Robbinsdale or Hopkins school district, so the city provides a boundary lookup. Parks and open space account for 15 percent of Golden Valley, more than 1,035 acres, and the city maintains nearly 50 miles of trails. Brookview is the most varied recreation hub: alongside its 33-acre park are municipal golf and lawn bowling, outdoor pub curling, the Backyard indoor playground, event rooms, and a restaurant. The broader park system adds playgrounds, courts, athletic fields, skating rinks, warming houses, and neighborhood nature areas.

In summer 2026, a free Monday concert series placed ten performances at Brookview Park, including an orchestra, steel drums, salsa, big band, and an ice-cream social. A free Playground Adventure Van rotated games and crafts among six neighborhood parks, while other youth events were shared with nearby Crystal, New Hope, and Robbinsdale. Resident fee assistance applies to most city recreation programs, and adaptive recreation is offered both directly and through a multi-city cooperative. That mix makes Golden Valley's local life unusually distributed: regional roads carry commuters through the city, but parks, trails, schools, and recreation programs are organized at neighborhood and intercity scales.
