Goldston, NC

Goldston is a Chatham County town south of Pittsboro, with 234 people at the 2020 census. U.S. 421 passes northeast at Exit 159; from there, Sanford is 12 miles southeast and Greensboro 44 miles northwest, while Pittsboro is 13 miles northeast by rural roads. The railroad is the town's old organizing fact. Goldston grew beside the Fayetteville and Yadkin Valley line in the 1880s, when the place was known as Corinth, and the tracks helped move lumber and farm products. Joseph John Goldston donated land for the railway station and helped give the town its later name; Goldston incorporated in 1907.

That history still shows in the mix of agriculture, poultry, and older houses. The Paschal-Womble House, built in 1889 for early town leader Loton Franklin Paschal, remains one of Goldston's named historic properties, alongside the William Alston Rives House. Rail traffic once supported feed mills and other farm businesses, while the town's current park provides ball fields, a basketball court, a playground, and a 0.7-mile walking trail. Goldston remains close to the Deep River and within the wider map formed by Sanford, Greensboro, and Pittsboro, with the four-lane route and old rail line telling two different versions of the same local story.
