About Goldthwaite

Goldthwaite is the Mills County seat, established in 1885 when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway arrived and town lots went up for sale. The community was named for Joe G. Goldthwaite, the railroad official who handled the auction. The old county jail, built in 1888, is now on the National Register, and a 1913 courthouse still marks the county-seat role. Goldthwaite is a Central Texas town whose first map was drawn by a rail line, a land sale, and a courthouse that followed close behind.
