Gopher Flats, OR

Gopher Flats is a census-designated place in Umatilla County, part of the Pendleton-Hermiston micropolitan area in eastern Oregon. The 2020 census counted 329 residents. As a CDP, it is a named rural settlement without an incorporated city government; its boundary describes a small community inside the county's wider landscape. Umatilla County grew around the railroad, dry-land wheat, irrigation, and livestock, and those regional patterns provide the setting for Gopher Flats. The CDP itself has a modest footprint, with its regional ties extending beyond the boundary.

Most of the county's larger reference points sit elsewhere, including Pendleton and Hermiston to the east and north. Umatilla County covers 3,231 square miles, so Gopher Flats occupies a very small place within a broad agricultural region. The useful way to picture it is as a defined community in the Columbia Basin country: small in population, connected to county roads and nearby towns, and surrounded by the land uses that have shaped eastern Oregon's settlement pattern.
