Gordon, NE

Gordon is a Sheridan County city on the northern Nebraska plains, where farm and ranch country meets the Pine Ridge and Sandhills landscape. The 2020 census counted 1,504 residents. U.S. Highway 20 connects Gordon with Rushville, the county seat, and the wider northern Nebraska road network; South Dakota is about 14 miles north. The town’s scale comes from agriculture, schools, local services, and the long distances between neighboring communities.

Settlers from Indiana led by Reverend John A. Scamahorn founded Gordon in 1884, and the town was named for the adventurer John Gordon. The railroad arrived during Sheridan County’s organizing years, helping Gordon become a commercial point for farms and ranches. Gordon incorporated as a village in 1885 and later became a city. The county’s history includes Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho homelands, cattle trails, homesteading, and irrigation projects along the Niobrara. Gordon remains a working northern Nebraska town with a railroad beginning, a ranch-country present, and a name tied to the region’s older river-and-deer geography.
