Goshen, NJ

Goshen is an unincorporated census-designated place within Middle Township, Cape May County, along Route 47, also called Delsea Drive. Aaron Leaming was raising cattle here in 1693, and a settlement existed by 1710. The old road still runs through the center, linking Goshen to Rio Grande, Dennisville, and the rest of the Cape May mainland. This is inland Cape May: farm fields, wooded lanes, old homes, and marsh-to-shore drives instead of the resort boardwalk geography farther south.

The 1872 Goshen Public School, with its bell tower and rectangular schoolhouse form, remains one of the county's notable historic buildings. The Goshen Volunteer Fire Company acquired it after school use ended, and the building's preservation story continues beside Route 47. Residents attend Middle Township Public Schools, including Middle Township High School, while the Goshen Historic Schoolhouse and Mini Park gives the crossroads a recognizable local landmark. Goshen is a Cape May community where cattle history, a one-room schoolhouse, birding country, and Route 47 remain part of the same everyday map.
