About Gosport

Gosport is an Owen County town between the White River and Indiana State Road 67 in south-central Indiana. It was platted in 1829 and named for Ephraim Goss, an early settler; the post office has operated here since 1843. The Gosport Historic District and the Dr. H. G. Osgood House preserve pieces of that nineteenth-century town, while the river and highway still help place the community. Gosport sits within the Bloomington metropolitan area but keeps the scale of a town with its own Main Street.

The current town map includes shops and eateries along Main Street, a farmers' market, holiday festivals, a boat ramp on the White River, and a new playground in the town park. Town Hall handles local water service, ordinances, and council business, so the old center still carries practical work as well as historic buildings. Gosport is an Indiana river town with a long post-office history, a listed historic district, and a present-day calendar built around Main Street, the river, the park, and neighbors who keep town events moving.
