About Gouverneur
Gouverneur is a village on the Oswegatchie River in St. Lawrence County, where U.S. 11, NY 58, and NY 812 converge. The village was incorporated in 1850, and its compact downtown grew along the river and road junction. The 2010 census counted 3,949 residents. The river, highways, and village streets keep the center legible as a North Country crossroads, with the surrounding town and county roads spreading into farmland and lake country. The village park is bordered by churches, the Public Library, the Gouverneur Museum, and Main Street shops, putting civic, cultural, and commercial life close together.
Cives Corporation's structural-steel distribution center adds a working-industrial piece to the local map, while the town and county supply the larger rural surroundings. Gouverneur has also received a $4.5 million NY Forward award for downtown work. The local scoop is that the river, road junction, park, and business blocks sit close enough to read as one village center, with industry and rural roads immediately beyond it.
