Gowrie, IA

Gowrie is a Webster County city whose strongest tradition arrives every July. The Gowrie Fourth of July Celebration grew from a parade that began in 1873 and now brings fireworks, a carnival, bandshell performances, and a crowd drawn from well beyond town. American Legion Peterson Post #431 helps organize the event, including a parade entry carrying more than 270 flags named for veterans connected to the Gowrie Township Cemetery or the post. For a small Iowa city, the holiday is a major piece of the calendar and a reason old ties keep resurfacing.

The town’s name comes from Gowrie in Scotland, while the post office has operated here since 1871. Gowrie is part of the Southeast Valley Community School District, with Southeast Valley High School in town, so school life gives the city another regional role during the rest of the year. The streets lead through central Iowa farm country, but the Fourth turns the whole place outward: parade route, park carnival, chicken dinner, fireworks, and the bandshell all become parts of one long day. Gowrie is easy to remember because it has made a civic ritual out of showing up for itself.
