Graettinger, IA

Graettinger is a Palo Alto County city near the Des Moines River, where the 2020 census counted 832 residents. It began taking shape in the 1880s after the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway crossed the area. The rail line put a town site on the map and connected local farms with markets beyond the county. The river remains the other big geographic reference, running near a city laid out on a compact all-land footprint.

Graettinger-Terril Community School District serves the area, a rural district created by the 2010 merger of the Graettinger and Terril districts. The town also has a yearly celebration built around a parade, carnival, street dance, variety show, and other community events. Those traditions give the calendar a local rhythm, while the railway and river show why the settlement formed here. Graettinger is a small Iowa city with a straightforward shape: rail town, river neighbor, farm-service center, and school community. The river and railway still make the town legible on a county map.
