Grand Beach, MI

Grand Beach is a small Berrien County village on the Lake Michigan shore near the Michigan–Indiana border, within New Buffalo Township. The 2020 census counted 310 residents. It began around 1903 as a resort development on about 600 acres of Lake Michigan dunes, with the Michigan Central Railroad bringing day visitors from Chicago and nearby cities. Cottages, a dining hall, an entertainment pier, and golf made the place a destination before the automobile changed the travel pattern. Three Frank Lloyd Wright homes and the village’s long lakeshore give the old resort plan a modern architectural and beach-town layer. Grand Beach still revolves around the shore, the public golf course, village streets, and the seasonal difference between summer visitors and year-round residents.

The beach is part of village life, but this is not an open county shoreline; local rules and village government shape access and daily use. New Buffalo and the Michigan–Indiana border sit close by, while Chicago is across the lake. Grand Beach is a tiny resort village whose identity comes from a railroad that no longer brings the crowds, a golf course that remains central, and a strip of Lake Michigan sand and water that keeps the original idea alive.
