Grand Isle, LA

Grand Isle is a Jefferson Parish town on a barrier island at the mouth of Barataria Bay, where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Mississippi River delta. The 2020 census counted 1,005 residents. Louisiana Highway 1 is the only land route on and off the island, and the town lies about 50 miles south of New Orleans. Fishing, shrimping, oysters, offshore work, the state park, and the Coast Guard all belong to the same narrow strip of coast. The island’s only school and parish services also sit within that exposed corridor.

The island’s live-oak chenier ridge sheltered people long before modern roads: Chitimacha communities used the island, Spanish land grants followed in the 1780s, and later settlers built a fishing and resort economy. A highway reached the island in 1931, and the Tarpon Rodeo began two years later. Storms now shape every public project, from beach and dune rebuilding to breakwaters and flood protection after Hurricane Ida. Grand Isle’s daily life is a negotiation with water, wind, and the working coast.
