Grand Isle, LA

Grand Isle is Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island, sitting right on the Gulf about a two-hour drive south of New Orleans. Home to around a thousand year-round residents, the town revolves almost entirely around the water. Life here moves to the rhythm of fishing boats, oyster docks, offshore crews, and quiet weekends on the beach. Reaching the island requires driving down Highway 1 across miles of open marshland, leading into a narrow strip of land where you will find the local school, grocery spots, and Grand Isle State Park.

People have settled along this live-oak ridge for generations, and today it remains a favorite destination for anglers, birdwatchers, and folks looking for an unhurried coastal pace. The famous Tarpon Rodeo brings in big summer crowds, but most of the year feels like a close-knit village where everybody knows their neighbors. Relocating here does come with practical realities, as living on the front line of the Gulf means watching the weather closely, prepping for storm season, and respecting the surrounding waters.
