Grand Rapids, OH

Grand Rapids began as Gilead on the south bank of the Maumee River, platted in 1833 at the head of the rapids. When the Miami and Erie Canal followed the river's north bank, Ohio built a side-cut feeder so Gilead could share the canal traffic. A large dam went across the Maumee at the rapids in 1845 to hold enough water for the canal system. In 1868, the village adopted the name Grand Rapids, keeping the river's physical character in its new name.

The river and old canal still set the pace of the village. The Gilead Sidecut Canal meets the Maumee near the dam, which was rebuilt in 1908, and a shelter house built by WPA labor in the 1930s remains part of the riverfront park. The towpath and waterway shape local walks and views, while a branch of the Weston Public Library serves village readers. Grand Rapids is a Wood County village where canal engineering, a working river, historic homes, and a small-town library all gather around the same bend.
