Grand Saline, TX

Grand Saline is a Van Zandt County city in East Texas at the meeting of U.S. 80 and State Highway 110, about 75 miles east of Dallas and 35 miles northwest of Tyler. The 2020 census counted 3,107 residents. Salt is the reason the town is here: the earlier settlement was called Jordan's Saline, the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived in 1873, and the depot name Grand Saline gradually took over. Morton Salt later became the dominant local operator. Salt still supplies the town's best shorthand.

The Salt Palace, built from rock salt, keeps the mining story right in the center of town, while the annual Salt Festival brings street dancing, a parade, contests, and music to downtown. Grand Saline ISD serves local students, and the surrounding creeks, hardwood timber, farms, and mine country give the roads an East Texas texture. Grand Saline's local scoop is a railroad-and-salt town where the ground beneath Main Street still matters as much as the highway signs.
