About Grangeville

Grangeville is a Kings County census-designated place just west-northwest of Hanford, in the agricultural plain connected to Kings River irrigation. James A. Hackett and Peter Kanawyer founded the community in 1874, and a post office operated there from that year until 1920. The Southern Pacific Railroad bypassed Grangeville in 1876, a turn that changed the town's early momentum; nearby Armona later became a shipping point for the Grangeville farming and fruit-growing region. Grangeville is a central California place whose oldest story runs through water, agriculture, and the railroad line that missed it.
