About Granite City

Granite City is a city in Madison County, Illinois, situated along the Mississippi River within the St. Louis metropolitan area. Founded in 1896 by industrialist brothers William and Frederick Niedringhaus as a steelmaking company town, the community of approximately 26,550 takes its name from their patent on graniteware kitchen utensils. Located adjacent to the Chain of Rocks Canal, the city is served by Granite City Community Unit School District 9.
