Grant, MI

Grant grew out of the Newaygo County lumber era; Andrew J. Squier built the first sawmill here in 1882. Today the city's center follows M-37, with city offices and police on the highway, while public works, water, and other municipal services are part of the city's operations. Water Tower Park adds a memorable local marker: its wooden tower is one of Michigan's last two historic wooden water towers, and an original Chessie System caboose sits beside the park.

Blanche Lake Park, across from Grant Elementary, brings a boat launch, docks, swimming beach, ballfield, amphitheater, and trails into the town map. The seasonal farmers market sets up on Saturdays, while the Community Center and Grant Public Schools provide year-round gathering and school facilities. Beyond the city, Newaygo County opens toward the Muskegon River, Hardy Dam Pond, nearby state and county parks, and the Dragon Trail. Grant's local character comes from that clear overlap: a highway-centered city with a lumber past, distinctive water-tower and rail remnants, and a link to the lake-and-forest country around it.
