About Grassflat

Grassflat is a Clearfield County census-designated place in Cooper Township, set among former mining ground and the roads that cross the Allegheny Plateau. The 2020 census counted 479 residents. Pennsylvania Route 53 runs just west of the community, linking it to Interstate 80 at Kylertown and to Snow Shoe. The place’s map carries the marks of coal country: an old railroad bed, township roads, reclaimed mine sites, and homes sit close together.

A Pennsylvania mine-reclamation project around Grassflat graded highwalls, backfilled spoil, and addressed poor water quality at abandoned workings. The old railroad bed beside the work area is used by walkers, giving the former industrial corridor a present-day footpath. The route is the main outside link, while township roads carry the closer local pattern. The reclaimed ground is part of the town’s present view. Grassflat is a small place whose local geography is easy to read in layers—homes beside roads, roads beside the old rail grade, and the mine landscape being reshaped around them.
