Gray CDP (Somerset County), PA

Gray is a census-designated place along Pennsylvania Route 985 in Jenner Township, about nine miles north of Somerset. Its present-day footprint is small, but the place was built around a much bigger coal story. Consolidation Coal Company and the Western Maryland Railway developed Gray as a company town, with a mine, stores, schools, a movie theater, and housing for workers and their families. At the mine's height, hundreds of people worked there, and the settlement drew residents from places as varied as Alabama, Tennessee, Italy, and Austria.

The mine and company-town system are gone, but they still give Gray its clearest sense of place. This is Somerset County's high plateau country, where mountain roads, farms, timber, and old coal communities sit close together. Gray has a post-office identity and a Route 985 address, but no separate municipal government; it is a named CDP in Jenner Township. The local scoop is that a drive through Gray passes through the remains of a deliberately built working town, one whose stores, school life, theater, and labor struggles once made it feel far larger than its current population.
