About Great Bend

Great Bend is a Jefferson County hamlet and census-designated place in the northern part of the Town of Champion, where New York Routes 3 and 26 meet County Road 47. The 2020 census counted 807 residents. The Black River wraps around the northeast and northwest sides, with Fort Drum across the river to the northwest and Deferiet across it to the northeast. The river, the military reservation, and the highway junction make the local map easy to read, even though the settlement itself is small.

Great Bend's older life grew from the river crossing: nineteenth-century accounts mention a grist mill, sawmill, inns, stores, and a Baptist church. Today, town and county roads, the volunteer Great Bend Fire Department, and the nearby Fort Drum and Carthage area handle the practical business. The fire department reached its centennial in 2024, a sign of how much local work is carried by one community institution. Great Bend is a North Country hamlet shaped by water, military neighbors, and the road between the Black River towns.
