Green Island, NY

Green Island is Albany County's coterminous town-village, a community of 2,934 residents in the 2020 census surrounded by the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. It is one of only five town-village amalgamations in New York, and the former island was connected to the mainland on the Hudson's west side in the 1960s. The village's three-island history sits on top of a strong industrial history: rail-car manufacturing, a Ford plant, and other factories shaped its growth. The river crossings also keep Troy, Watervliet, and the Capital Region in the everyday picture.

That industrial thread still shows in the Green Island Power Authority, village services, and the mix of businesses around the old residential and manufacturing sections. Heatly School serves the village and is a regular setting for sports, productions, concerts, and other events. Paine Street Park and Veteran's Memorial Stadium add playgrounds, courts, fields, and track space. Green Island is a tiny Hudson-Mohawk community whose town and village governments share one set of streets, utilities, school routines, and river crossings.
