Greenbush, MN

Greenbush is a Roseau County city of 682 people in the 2020 census, crossed by Minnesota Highways 11 and 32. The name comes from Sha Ach Wah, an Ojibwe phrase connected to spruce or green bush. Settlers arrived in the late 1880s and early 1890s, especially Scandinavian, Polish, and Bohemian homesteaders who claimed land under the Homestead Act. The first village, now called Old Greenbush, grew on a ridge that marked the former shore of ancient Lake Agassiz.

Greenbush shifted toward its present site as stores and farm businesses followed roads and rail connections. The city later became known for Central Boiler, founded in the mid-1980s by Dennis Brazier, which grew from a hometown manufacturer into a major outdoor-furnace company. Legion Park, Welcome Park, North End Park, and the Oak View Golf Course give the small city places to gather, while the swimming pool fills out the summer map. Greenbush holds several layers in one name: Ojibwe landscape, immigrant homesteads, old lake ridges, and a modern manufacturing business that still operates near the city.
