About Greene

Greene is a Chenango County village on the Chenango River, in the southwestern corner of the Town of Greene. The river and the former Chenango Canal shaped the settlement's location, while the village name honors General Nathanael Greene. The first outside settler arrived in the area in 1792, and early mills followed along the river and its creeks. The modern village has kept that waterway connection: the Route 41 bridge crosses the Chenango here, and the Chenango River Theatre, founded in 2006, gives the old river town a newer cultural marker.
