Greene, RI

Greene is a village and census-designated place in western Coventry, two miles east of Connecticut and two miles north of West Greenwich. The name honors Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, and the community grew around the railroad after what had been a swamp and cart path became a station in the 1850s. The former rail corridor is now the Coventry Greenway, part of the East Coast Greenway, while Route 14 runs along the northern edge through Fairbanks Corner. The place is organized by old movement lines: road, rail trail, and the Moosup River, which drains west toward Connecticut. Greene’s local gathering spot is the Greene Library on Hopkins Hollow Road, a branch of Coventry Public Library with afternoon and evening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays and morning hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Its current programming includes story programs, book groups, crafts, a farmers market, and occasional music, giving the village a recurring indoor meeting place alongside the trail and river. The roads lead northeast toward Providence and west to Moosup, so Greene’s geography is easy to read: a western Coventry village built around a rail line that became a trail and a river that still carries the landscape toward Connecticut.
