About Greenfield
Greenfield is Adair County’s seat, with a courthouse square and a strong aviation thread. The city became the county seat in 1875 after a long dispute with neighboring Fontanelle, and the 1896 courthouse still stands at the center of town as a National Register site. North of town, the Iowa Aviation Museum at the municipal airport carries Iowa flight history, including the state’s aviation hall of fame. Greenfield is served by Nodaway Valley schools, formed when Greenfield and Bridgewater-Fontanelle districts consolidated in 2000. The local shorthand is county government, courthouse square, and airplanes over the southwest Iowa prairie.
