About Greenfield

Greenfield is a Weakley County city whose story starts with a railroad and a field of wheat. The Illinois Central track reached the area in 1873, the first houses went up in 1874, and the post office arrived that same year. The town’s name came from the green wheat fields an early railroad engineer saw from the train. Greenfield incorporated in 1880 and now sits at the meeting of U.S. 45E and State Routes 54 and 124. The standout natural landmark is Big Cypress Tree State Natural Area, created in the 1970s around a champion bald cypress. It was Tennessee’s first designated natural area, giving this northwest Tennessee city a surprisingly memorable landmark.
