About Greenfield
Greenfield's three-mile Powerline Trail turns a former railroad corridor beneath transmission lines into an east-west route for walking, running, cycling, and everyday trips. Opened in 2022, it links homes, workplaces, businesses, parks, and the Oak Leaf Trail along the Root River. Konkel Park adds a more concentrated recreation hub: nearly 7,000 feet of asphalt paths, a wetland boardwalk and overlook, a Honey Creek footbridge, softball fields, sand-volleyball courts, exercise stations, playground, and reservable shelters. Its 2026 calendar ran from Dan Jansen Family Fest and summer concerts to outdoor movies, Zumba, a Fourth of July celebration, and Brews and Bites evenings. On Sundays from May through October, the farmers market brings produce, prepared food, live music, and a monthly makers market to the same grounds; Milwaukee County bus route 55 serves the park.
The city's irregular outline reflects a long history of subdivision and annexation. The Town of Kinnickinnic formed in 1839, became Greenfield in 1841, and originally covered 36 square miles. After neighboring municipalities absorbed much of that territory, Greenfield incorporated in 1957; today it covers about one-third of the original town. Greenfield Public Library opens until 8:30 four nights a week, and its adult calendar includes chess, Sheepshead, films, job-seeker workshops, summer reading, and an adapted craft program for adults with diverse abilities.
The 2020 census recorded 37,803 residents, while the 2025 estimate was 37,159. In the 2020-2024 profile, 22 percent of residents were 65 or older and 19 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Housing tenure was almost evenly divided: owners occupied 55 percent of homes, with a median value of $261,100 and median monthly mortgage-holder costs of $1,800; median gross rent was $1,170. Median household income was $70,459, and the mean travel time to work was about 22 minutes.
