Greensburg, KS

Greensburg is the Kiowa County seat in southwestern Kansas and home to the Big Well, the world’s largest hand-dug well. The well began as a municipal water project in the late 1880s, stopped serving as the city’s water supply in 1932, and opened to visitors as an attraction in the following decade. On May 4, 2007, an EF5 tornado tore through Greensburg, damaging about 95 percent of the city and killing eleven people. The disaster changed the city’s physical map and its place in the national conversation about small-town recovery.

Greensburg chose to rebuild around energy efficiency, water conservation, reclaimed materials, and wind power. City buildings, the school, hospital, and other civic spaces became part of that effort, while the Big Well Museum and Visitor Center keeps the older story in view. The Kiowa County Historical Museum and Soda Fountain, 5.4.7 Arts Center, and downtown businesses add places to pause between drives across the plains. Today the city still carries the memory of the tornado, but its character also comes from the deliberate decisions made afterward: a working county seat, a landmark below ground, and a town powered by the wind that crosses the prairie.
