Greensburg, MD

Greensburg is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Washington County, Maryland, east of Hagerstown near Smithsburg and Leitersburg. The 2020 census counted 236 people in 0.405 square miles. Its name travels farther than the CDP boundary: Greensburg Road runs through the surrounding rural area, with county records placing sections between Sandstone Drive and Welty Church Road. Maryland planning maps show the road threading through the small community among farms, scattered homes, and the roads leading toward the South Mountain country.

Churches give the road corridor some of its older landmarks. Welty Church of the Brethren sits on Greensburg Road, and family-history records refer to St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Greensburg in a 1907 bequest. Washington County's larger story includes German settlement, canals, railroads, and stone bridges, and Greensburg belongs to that rural western-Maryland landscape. The local scoop is a compact CDP whose local character is carried less by a downtown than by the roads, farms, and churches that surround it.
