Greenview, IL

Greenview is a Menard County village laid out in October 1857 by pioneer William Engle on land once owned by Charles Montgomery. The 2020 census counted 745 residents. Illinois Route 29 runs along the east side, linking the village north to Mason City and south to Athens. Salt Creek and Grove Creek shape the surrounding drainage, while the village's place in the Springfield metropolitan area brings the farm roads into a larger central Illinois network.

Greenview's village streets, local businesses, churches, and nearby fields organize the present community. The village was named for William G. Greene, who helped persuade the railroad to come through, and the old rail connection still accounts for the town's compact shape. Route 29 provides the daily through-line, and Grove Creek leads the landscape toward Salt Creek and the Sangamon River watershed. Greenview is a central Illinois village with a long settlement name, a two-direction highway, and creek country that keeps the place tied to the land around it.
