Greenville, GA

Greenville is Meriwether County’s seat, laid out in 1828 near the county’s center and named for Revolutionary War commander Nathanael Greene. The courthouse square has seen repeated resets: the first courthouse was destroyed by a tornado in 1893, and the 1903 courthouse was heavily damaged by fire in 1976 before being restored within its brick walls. Antebellum homes and other historic buildings remain part of the town’s record, while Walnut Creek runs east toward Red Oak Creek. Greenville is a west-central Georgia county seat where the square, the courthouse, and a creek keep the old county map legible.
