Greenville, ME

Greenville Junction is the rail-and-lake side of the town of Greenville, at Moosehead Lake’s south shore. Maine State Route 6 runs through the village, and its post office keeps the 04442 address. The Canadian Pacific Railroad built the junction depot in 1889; the distinctive station still stands near the road toward Rockwood and Greenville. The name makes sense once you see the map: rail, road, lake, and the town of Greenville all meet here.

Before roads took over, steamboats carried passengers, mail, supplies, livestock, and equipment across Moosehead Lake; as many as fifty boats once worked the water. The S.S. Katahdin, built in 1914, carries that history forward, while the Moosehead Historical Society’s museums keep the region’s logging, lake, and railroad stories close by. The depot now hosts tours and seasonal events, including a stop during the International Seaplane Fly-in. Greenville Junction’s local read is a working transportation crossroads with a lake at its shoulder and a historic depot doing more than sitting beside the tracks.
