Greenville, SC

Greenville’s downtown centers on Falls Park on the Reedy, where natural waterfalls tumble right past Main Street. For decades, a four-lane highway bridge actually hid the falls from view, until the city decided to tear it down and build the park. Today, the pedestrian Liberty Bridge curves over the water, offering open views of the gardens, rock formations, and walking paths below. Many of the old 19th-century textile mills that once drew power from the river have found new lives as riverside restaurants, apartments, and shops, giving the whole area a comfortable mix of historic brick and green open space.

A little further upstream, Unity Park offers 60 acres of green space on the western edge of downtown. The park opened in 2022, expanding on the grounds of historic Mayberry Park, which originally served Black children during the segregation era. Today, the grounds include massive playgrounds, splash pads, basketball courts, and wide-open lawns where families gather on warm afternoons. It sits right along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, making it easy to bike over from downtown, stop for lunch at the food hall in The Commons, or grab a drink at a neighboring craft brewery.

Beyond the downtown riverfront, Greenville's modern economy is anchored by advanced manufacturing and automotive research. Clemson University's International Center for Automotive Research, known locally as CU-ICAR, houses engineering programs and testing facilities that partner with major employers across the Upstate, including BMW and Michelin. The campus draws engineers, researchers, and graduate students working on vehicle technology and manufacturing systems. It brings steady job growth to the region and gives the city a strong tech presence outside the traditional business district.

Downtown stays active throughout the week thanks to a walkable layout packed with dining, arts, and community events. The Peace Center hosts Broadway tours, orchestra concerts, and outdoor performances right along the river. From May through October, Main Street shuts down to traffic on weekend mornings for the TD Saturday Market, where locals shop for farm-fresh produce, baked goods, and flowers. Signature street festivals like Artisphere in the spring and Fall for Greenville in autumn bring live music and local food vendors downtown, making it easy to step out for dinner and spend an entire evening exploring on foot.
