About Greenville

Greenville is an Augusta County census-designated place in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, laid out in 1794 along the Great Wagon Road. Thomas and Jane Steele divided the original village into fourteen one-acre lots, and the place took its name from Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. In the nineteenth century Greenville was a stagecoach stop, and later the B&O Railroad kept a depot here. U.S. Route 11 now follows the older Valley corridor. Greenville is a Virginia village whose map still carries the layers of wagon road, rail line, and highway.
