Greenwood, NE

Greenwood was established in 1869 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad built a station at the western end of Cass County. The village was named for Silas Greenwood, a trapper and hunter who had lived along Salt Creek, and it incorporated in 1883. The railroad brought elevators, stores, churches, and farm shipments; by the 1880s Greenwood’s business district handled grain and livestock moving through the station. The 2020 census counted 595 residents.

The depot now sits in Greenwood Village Park as the Greenwood Depot Museum, maintained by the historical society. The village also keeps a community center with a library, a volunteer fire and rescue department, a small business district, a park, and a gazebo. Frontier Cooperative grew from the Farmers Union Cooperative Association organized in 1915, and Baker’s Candies still gives the village a manufacturing and retail detail. Greenwood sits west of the interstate between Lincoln and Omaha, while its older street pattern, depot museum, and grain history keep the railroad town visible in the present-day village.
