Greenwood, WI

Greenwood sits along the Black River in Clark County, Wisconsin, where forest, water, and farm country meet in a small city center. Before settlement, the area was a hunting ground shared by Ojibwe, Menominee, and Ho-Chunk people. Lumbering followed, including 1840s work by Mormon loggers who floated white pine downstream toward Nauvoo. Later, stagecoach routes, local businesses, and the river's crossings helped Greenwood grow into a town with a recognizable Main Street.

Peace Memorial Park now occupies a central place beside City Hall, with access to the Black River for fishing and canoeing. The Branstiter Museum keeps Greenwood's local history in view, while parks, schools, churches, and small businesses carry the city through ordinary weeks. The river is still part of the city's practical and recreational life, even as the old timber economy has faded. Greenwood's character comes from that continuity: a community shaped by forest work, river travel, and a civic tradition that made room for a peace monument at its center.
