About Grenville
Grenville was laid out in 1914 when the Fairmont and Veblen Railroad reached Day County, and the town took its name from the greenery of the original site. The railroad also required the earlier Grenville, founded in 1885, to move, so the present town is a planned rail settlement with a relocated predecessor. Day County's historical account describes how depots, grain elevators, stores, churches, and later highways organized local trade and school routes. Grenville now sits in northeastern South Dakota farm country, with its name and street plan tied to the county's railroad era.
