About Grey Forest
Grey Forest is a small incorporated Hill Country city on Scenic Loop Road, about eighteen miles northwest of central San Antonio. The 2020 census counted 492 residents. The community developed around 1960 and incorporated by 1964, when the wooded corridor was beginning to attract homes outside the older San Antonio street grid. Scenic Loop still carries the local geography: hills, waterways, wildlife, and long views along a route that runs through Grey Forest, Helotes, and Leon Springs.
The city's center is a civic one. Scenic Loop Playground Club Park is city-owned, and a historical marker for the playground stands across from Grey Forest City Hall. That marker gives the road a memory as well as a destination, linking today's park to the people who built up the corridor. Northside Independent School District serves local students, while San Antonio supplies the jobs, shopping, and larger city frame. Grey Forest stays small by keeping its municipal footprint close to the road, the park, and the surrounding Hill Country landscape.
