About Gruetli-Laager

Gruetli-Laager is a Grundy County city made from two places with two different beginnings. Gruetli was founded in 1869 by German-speaking Swiss immigrants brought to the Cumberland Plateau through the Tennessee Kolonisation Gesellschaft. Laager began as a railroad stop called Henley’s Switch and took its present name in 1920. The Collins River cuts into Savage Gulf just north of town. Gruetli-Laager is South Cumberland with Swiss roots, a railroad name, and a river carving the plateau into the background.
