Guernsey, WY

Guernsey is a Platte County town on the North Platte River where emigrant trails, railroad, irrigation works, and the present-day highway all meet. The town took its name from cattle rancher C.A. Guernsey, who arrived in 1880 and later helped promote the dam that changed the valley’s water map. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad reached the area in 1902, and Guernsey incorporated that year. The 2020 census counted 1,130 residents.

History is close at hand. The Oregon Trail Ruts south of town preserve wagon grooves cut five feet into soft sandstone, while Register Cliff records the names of travelers who followed the North Platte. Guernsey State Park surrounds the reservoir behind the 1927 dam and includes Civilian Conservation Corps buildings, trails, and water access. Today the town also sits near Camp Guernsey, BNSF rail operations, and an industrial park, giving the county a mix of military, transportation, water, and agricultural work. Guernsey is a river town with an unusually physical past: the road cuts and wagon tracks are still part of the same landscape that carries school buses, freight, ranch traffic, and park visitors now.
