About Gustavus
Gustavus is a second-class city on the Icy Strait side of Southeast Alaska, set on a broad plain shaped by retreating glaciers. The Salmon River runs through town. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve surrounds the community on three sides, with the ocean on the fourth, so the park is part of the local geography from town roads to park facilities. Tlingit people used this river-and-beach landscape for fishing, berry picking, and other seasonal work long before the city formed.

That setting also dictates how Gustavus connects to the rest of Southeast Alaska. The city is about 48 air miles west of Juneau, and people arrive by air, Alaska Marine Highway ferry, or the road that runs to Bartlett Cove and the park’s visitor facilities. The airport, ferry terminal, and park road divide the community’s connections into three distinct legs: flights to Juneau and beyond, the marine route, and the land approach to Glacier Bay. Local lodges and bed-and-breakfasts may arrange shuttles between those points and park lodging. Lodges, guides, restaurants, and seasonal visitor services sit alongside commercial fishing and city work; the surrounding waters and the Salmon River keep fishing part of the town’s lived economy.
Tourism is a major part of the local economy, with lodging, guiding, dining, and park transportation concentrated around the summer visitor season. Commercial fishing, seasonal work, and city services supply the year-round side of the ledger. The city’s public library, fire hall, recycling center, and community chest sit alongside the Gustavus Community Center, which serves as a gathering place. The city is spread across a road network, with these facilities serving a landscape that has no dense downtown. That overlap makes Gustavus distinctive: a small incorporated community with ordinary municipal routines, sharing its roads and facilities with people headed into one of Alaska’s most consequential protected landscapes.
