Hagan, GA

Hagan is a city in Evans County, part of a southeast Georgia corridor built in the railroad age. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated it in 1906, and the community took its name from Susan Hagan, wife of the original town-site owner. Its early center was a Perkins family sawmill established in the 1890s. The mill closed in 1910 during an early-twentieth-century depression, and many employees left with it. The railroad age still sets the line of the county’s settlements.

Hagan now meets Claxton along US 280 and the Claxton–Evans County Industrial Park. That connection puts a small city beside the county seat and a regional work corridor. Within Hagan, Bradley Memorial Park and Maggie Lee Lewis Children’s Park mark the current civic map, while the restored nineteenth-century home of pioneer G. Wesley DeLoach is used for community and civic functions. The local scoop is a former sawmill town whose present-day map is legible through the highway, the neighboring county seat, two parks, and a preserved house.
